Cambridge to Stansted is approximately 30 miles directly along the M11, the shortest of our Cambridge long distance transfers, and is the most logical journey to make to an airport in the area. Stansted operates a varied European air network, Cambridge has no airport with scheduled services, and the two are located on the same motorway.

Traffic is a mix of academic and research journeys, the technology and life sciences industry in the city, and the simple holidaymaker's departure. Their requirements differ. The first two require a car ready to pick them up from an office park at seven in the morning, while the last need space for two weeks of luggage.

This is a route where the train genuinely competes: services run direct to Stansted Airport station, right beneath the terminal, and the trip itself is quick.

The case for a car sits at both ends of the journey. Cambridge's research parks and outlying villages are well away from the station, so reaching the train means a taxi first. The earliest flights leave before any train is running, and a family of four with luggage doesn't move easily through a station either.

The train is a good fit for one traveller leaving the city centre in daytime. It's a poor fit for a research-park pickup, an early flight, or a family loading and unloading bags at both ends.

Stansted Airport charges for its drop-off area, at a higher rate beyond 15 minutes, and both rates are included in the comparison price, together with tolls.
