The Route

Newcastle to York is 85 miles south along the A1 and, in contrast to the Leeds journey, is one of our more leisure-led long distance chauffeur routes. It covers racedays in York, along with weekends, family trips and rural stays around the area.

This makes a difference to the purpose of the booking. A raceday is a lot of waiting with a little driving to do at each end, the countryside stay ends in some place difficult to access with a taxi, and both require time rather than mileage.

For speed and frequency, the train is a good way into York itself.

The final part of the journey is where it struggles. The racecourse, the villages of the Vale of York, and most of the countryside hotels aren't within walking distance of the station, and taxis on that side tend to vanish exactly when they're needed most - after a race meeting, or on a Saturday evening. A waiting car solves that outright.

Travelling with more people changes the sums too: one vehicle holds four passengers for one price, and race-day outfits take up more room than ordinary luggage.
