The Route

The journey from Cardiff to London City is about 160 miles east via the M4 and across London to the Royal Docks, one of our longer long distance airport routes. The journey is mainly for business, since this is the business airport: a short runway, a short distance from kerb to gate, and a timetable built around the working week rather than holidays.

This makes the journey distinctive from the other journeys from Cardiff to Heathrow and Gatwick. Bookings are fewer but steady, usually made by businesses, and the return is often confirmed at the same time.

Against the train The train from Cardiff Central takes you as far as Paddington, but London City Airport sits on the far side of town in the Royal Docks - reaching it means crossing London to the DLR and riding it out to the docks.

That last stretch is the slowest part of a journey of more than 160 miles, and it's the part most likely to derail a day built around a fixed meeting time.

The car crosses the Severn free of charge, picks up the M4, and drops you right at the terminal entrance.

There are no tolls on the Severn crossings. London City Airport charges drop off fees and parking fees if collection is made. They are included in the price comparison together with other fees, such as tolls and London charges where they apply.

Going back the flight will be tracked and pickup will take place after the landing, with the first hour of waiting being free of charge, having a named sign at the arrivals point of London City Airport.
