The Route

The distance from Glasgow to Edinburgh is roughly 47 miles on the M8 and takes about an hour, one of the shorter of our long distance chauffeur routes. The two cities operate as one labour market, and therefore this route occurs continuously in both directions.

It is primarily business travel with finance and legal industry on both sides. It is also events: concerts and sports matches in Glasgow, festivals and conferences in Edinburgh, and golf tournaments moving through both locations.

Trains run regularly and cover the 50 minutes between the two centres, against roughly an hour by road. For a single, one-off trip between the two, it's the right way to travel.

Where a car earns its keep is everything a timetable can't do: carrying someone through a day that touches both cities and a third stop, waiting out a meeting that overruns, collecting people from an actual address rather than a station, charging once for the whole party instead of several separate tickets, and cutting straight through the crowds that build up during the August festivals - none of which has anything to do with distance.

For a golfing party moving clubs between the two coasts, the train simply never enters the conversation.
