It is approximately 215 miles to the north from Manchester to Glasgow on this long distance journey, along the M6 and M74 through Shap and over the Southern Uplands. It is a long motorway journey through open countryside, which is significant for this trip as compared to most others.

Traffic consists of people travelling between the two big commercial centres, traffic related to concerts, events and to the Western side of Scotland for touring and golf.

The West Coast route from Piccadilly to Glasgow Central is direct, takes about three and a half hours, and holds up well against driving.

The car pulls ahead when there's more travel to come. Glasgow Central is the end point for most business and leisure travellers, but a group heading on to Ayrshire, Loch Lomond or the Highlands has another leg to arrange - and the same car that brought them can simply keep going.
